The Silver Peace Dollar
Silver dollars minted in the United States between 1921 and 1935 bore the legend of Peace on the reverse side and became known as the Peace Dollar, designed by Anthony de Francisci it is beleived that his wife was reportedly used as the model for Miss Liberty on the obverse side of the coin, and on the reverse side depicts a eagle standing on a rock awash in rays from the sun, with the motto Peace on the rock the eagle stands on. The Peace Dollar remains one of the most iconic patterns in the history of American coinage. The Peace Dollar was issued without congressional sanction under the terms of the Pittman Act, and was placed into circulation on January the 3rd 1922 with at total of 1,006,473 peices minted, the Hi Releif of the 1921 design was found to be impractical for coinage and was modified to a Shallow Releif in 1922. The Peace Dollar is a very collectible coin, they are the last big US silver dollars to be minted from 90 percent silver and used for circulation. There are 3 different locations Peace Dollars were minted at Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco, those coins with no mintmark were struck in Denver, those with a D in Denver and those with an S in San Francisco, the most valuable Peace Dollar is the 1928 Peace Dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint.
