Silver Kookaburra Coin
The Silver Kookaburra coin was first minted and issued back in 1990 by the Australian Perth Mint, and since it released it has become one of the most popular annually released silver bullion coins released by the mint. With its annually changing kookaburra bird designs the released coins have proven themselves popular with collectors eagerly awaiting the latest coin design release.
Kookaburra coins are released in a number of different weights and sizes and finishes, from the humble 1oz coin to the much larger and vastly more expensive 1kilo sized Kookaburra. There are also silver proof and special edition privy marked coins released yearly.
Silver Kookaburra Coin Designs
The design on the reverse side of each annually released Kookaburra bullion coin is different from the previous years, which makes the Kookaburra series very desirable for collectors want to add the newest design to there collections. Each Kookaburra design features the Australian Kookaburra bird which is a very large terrestrial kingfisher native to Australia and New Guinea. The observe side of the Kookaburra has the portrait design of Queen Elizabeth II upon it, this design is by the mint engraver Ian Rank Broadley.
Every Silver Kookaburra bullion coin has like all other bullion coins released by the Perth Mint a .999 fine silver content. Another factor for their popularity is the limited mintage figures when released, since their introduction in 1990, the Perth Mint has had a mintage cap of 300,000 for their 1oz coins (which has risen to 500,000 since 2011). There is no mintage cap in place for the larger sized Kookaburra coin releases.
Kookaburra Coin Varieties
Kookaburra coins have been released in many different varieties, apart from the usual different sizes and weights, the Kookaburra has been released in a silver proof coin, a gilded silver coin and many varieties of privy marked coins. The kookaburra is the flagship coin program for the Australian Perth Mint.
These Silver Kookaburra issued as legal tender under the 1965 Australian Currency Act.
