Ships That Changed The World...Golden Hind
The Golden Hind is the second coin from the Ships That Changed The World series released by the Austrailian Perth Mint, this second release in this new series features the Golden Hind best known for its circumnavigation of the globe between 1577 and 1580 and captained by Sir Francis Drake. In 1577 Queen Elizabeth I of England chose Sir Francis Drake as the leader of an expedition intended to pass around South America through the Strait of Magellan and to explore the coast that lay beyond. Before setting sail Drake met the queen face to face for the first time where she said to him, ‘We would gladly be revenged on the King of Spain for divers injuries that we have received’, in effect the Queen gave Drake her unofficial permission to privateer. The coins reverse depicts a representation of the Golden Hind in full sail and set against a coloured globe map and the inscription GOLDEN HIND, the design also incorporates the Perth Mints P mintmark. The Perth Mint will release no more than 5,000 of these silver proof coins, the coin is housed in a presentation display case and superbly illustrated shipper, each coin is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
